Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Whitaker´s Reminiscences, Incidents and Anecdotes: Recollections of Other Days and Years; Or What I Saw and Heard and Thought of People Whom I Knew, and What They Did and Said This book is purely accidental. I knew there were enough books in the world, and I had not the remotest idea that I could be induced to become the author of another, while there were so many millions of pages, of unread literature, lying upon library shelves. Had I been asked to write a book I should have promptly and emphatically declined, unless most extraordinary inducements had been offered. Even then, I would have hesitated, as I should have doubted the wisdom of the undertaking. But the book is written, and I did it; so that the old adage has again been verified: "The unexpected happens when least expected." The public must not blame me. I was attending strictly to my own affairs, leading a very quiet life, not even thinking of making any noise in the world, when the editor of the News and Observer, employing a subtilty, somewhat similar to that which turned old Mother Eve´s head, beguiled me into the opinion that, possibly, I might write a few letters that would interest some of the older people, and, perhaps, instruct a few of the younger. An extract from an editorial of the News and Observer explains the whole affair, and places the blame of this publication where it should rest, upon the editor of that paper. On September 3, 1903, the News and Observer made this announcement: "At the request of the editor of the News and Observer, the oldest living editor in Raleigh, Rev. R H Whitaker, D.D., who is a useful and honored minister of the gospel, begins a series of reminiscences which will appear every Sunday, for some months, in the News and Observer, and on Mondays in the Farmer and Mechanic. His first letter appears to-day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
