He loved God, and sang sweet hymns of praise to Him on his harp. This Is what David sang: - "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters." One day, the prophet Samuel came to the house of David´s father, and sent for the shepherd boy and anointed him - that is, put oil on his head - to show that God had chosen him to to be King of Israel; for God loved David because he was good. Israel was at war with the Philistines, and David was sent by his father to see his brothers, who were soldiers in King Saul´s army. When he reached the camp, he heard the great giant Goliath daring the Israelites to come out and fight with him. David offered to do so, but King Saul told him that he was too young. David answered, "God once helped me to kill a lion and a bear in defence of my poor sheep, I am sure He will help me to kill this Philistine." Then King Saul said, "Go, and may God help you."
