The third chapter of St. Luke contains the strangest family-tree ever erected. Its root is God; its stem Adam, Noah, Abraham and his descendants, and the fruit is Jesus. There is no break in the descent anywhere. There is no intimation in the record anywhere that at some point a new kind of being has come in. The author seems to assume with the strangest simplicity that all the persons named are of the same species. That "like begets like" is one of the truisms of human science and human experience. When father, son, and grandson are spoken of, it is assumed without question that they all belong to the same kind of being. Now, here stands Adam in the direct line of descent between God and Jesus.
