Excerpt from Goldsmith´s Deserted Village, Cowper´s Task, (Book III., The Garden): And the De Coverley Papers (From the Spectator) The eighteenth century, as regards the history of poetry, may be conveniently divided into three periods. The first embraces almost half the century, while the artificial school of Pope and his admiring imitators bore undisturbed sway within the domain of the Muses; the second is a period of barrenness and transition, during which the sentimental school of Darwin and Hayley spread out in vain their viands of luscious sweets to regale the sated appetites of their guests, and when a few voices, led by Thomson, Gray, and Collins, were gently heralding in the dawn of a brighter day; in the last, poetry, under the hand of Cowper, the real, if unconscious, founder of a new school, broke entirely loose from the conventional artificiality of the early part of the century, and returned in a manner to the old sources of inspiration, at which had drunk the great masters of English verse - Chaucer, Spenser, and Shakespeare. The Augustan age, a term frequently employed to denote the supremacy of Pope in poetry and Addison in prose, possessed but little that could call forth and develope a true poetic spirit. Prior to the Revolution, literary men had formed a distinct class; but, with the introduction of responsible parliamentary government, it was united with, or rather absorbed into, the political.
