And such is the magic of his art that, though we are shown in black and white, the encompassing light appears golden. And we are young. We had survived the Depression and World II. We had also flourished during the threee years of peace prior to the photograph - years that we assusmed were prelude to a golden age, never suspecting that only two years later the Korean War would beginn and the gold would go out of the light." Thus writes Gore Vidal of a photograph that Karl Bissinger took in the patiogarden of the Cafe Nicholson on East 57th Street in New York City in the late 194os. In the photograph with Vidal are the playwright Tennesse Williams, the ballet dancer Tanaquil Le Clercq, the painter Buffie Johnson, and writer Donald Windham. Bissinger photographed the luminiaries of high Bohemia - writers, dancers, misicians, painters. journalists, and, as Vidal notes, strange celebrities - for magazines such als ´Flair´ and ´Theatre Arts´ an ´Harpers´s Bazaar´ in the late 1940s and early 1950s, an era full of promise before more war, hot and cold, and the McCarthy Era dimmed that special light.
