Excerpt from A Personal Narrative of Two Years Imprisonment in Burmah Several friends, to whom I have from time to time related fragments of the story told in the following pages, expressed an opinion that a connected narrative would possess sufficient interest to engage the attention of a class of readers who seek for amusement, and who might not think it the less exciting because it is true. These friends have often urged me to prepare such an one for the press. Perhaps I might have adopted their suggestion, but never having followed literary pursuits, I was naturally diffident of my powers of description, and of my ability to convey to the minds of others the impressions which the events related had very forcibly imprinted on my own, or even of relating the facts themselves in a sufficiently engaging manner. Recently, however, during an attack of illness which confined me several months to my couch, I overcame this diffidence, and attempted the task for my own amusement. The occupation proved a very efficient aid to the physician, and many a weary hour was beguiled of its sadness as the story proceeded. If my friends derive half as much pleasure in reading as I did in writing it, I shall be amply satisfied.
