I had my connexions among the ringleaders, which I took care should turn to our benefit. The next object was, to prevail upon Alvanda to write such a letter as might make the minister judge his presence necessary, in order to suppress the disorder. I acted upon him by mixed motives; for he would by no means avowedly consent to second our project. I exaggerated the disorder to the utmost possible degree; I used every argument to persuade him, that it was such as actually to call for the presence of Corasmin. At the same time, I secretly allowed him to perceive the consequences, which might follow the temporary removal of that minister from court.
