Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Christian Monasticism in Egypt: To the Close of the Fourth Century Although various books and articles have been published recently upon the subject of monasticism, there is singularly little that deals with its origin in Egypt. English, French and German writers, whose works cover a wider field, have necessarily been unable to devote much space to the particular question of the origin. The purpose therefore of the first part of this study is an attempt to show how monasticism grew out of the special conditions of thought and life in Egypt, a mode of approach which has not apparently been adopted elsewhere to the same extent. The latter part deals with a subject that has been treated attractively by many writers, but it aims at being a survey of the first century of monasticism in Egypt, based upon those sources which have been generally accepted by recent criticism as the most reliable. It includes, too, a detailed account of the Pachomian system, derived mainly from the Greek life of Pachomius and the Latin Rules of Jerome, for the additional reason that the subject has not been treated at any length by English writers. Moreover, P. Ladeuze in his great work was preoccupied with demonstrating the superiority of the Greek to the Coptic and with refuting the views of Amelineau and Grützmacher.
