Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Short Sketch of the Tractarian Upheaval It has seemed to the author that a short work, such as the one attempted in these pages, might possibly be found useful by such persons who have heard of the Oxford Movement, of The Tracts for the Times, and of the secession of Dr. Newman to Rome, but who possess little definite or systematic knowledge of these matters. Much undoubtedly has been written upon the personages, and the events of that great era, but the information lies scattered in the pages of many different books, some of these only to be obtained at rare intervals from the second-hand dealers. The author does not profess allegiance to any one party in the church, nor is he conscious of any preference for one above another. It has been his endeavour in this short sketch, simply to record facts, and the impressions created by those facts on the minds of the ablest men of all schools of thought. He has found himself unable to invent any theory, or discover any general law, which would cover and account for all the features of the Movement; and has, therefore, been spared the temptation to twist facts into accordance with any such preconceived explanation. It is almost needless to say that he does not profess complete agreement with all the sentiments which he has quoted from so many different writers.
