Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Poor Jack the Settlers in Canada In 1840, the year of the publication of "Poor Jack," Captain Marryat had reached the zenith of his literary career. The novels which appeared in 1839 and 1840, "The Phantom Ship," "Olla Podrida," "Poor Jack," and "Percival Keene," though they cannot rank with the best of his earlier work, at any rate in parts attain a very high level of excellence. "Poor Jack" especially contains one or two jokes as good as any recorded of Mr. Midshipman Easy. At no other period of his literary labours did Captain Marryat cover so large and varied a field of subjects, but in the book now before us, he is content for once to confine his wandering fancy to the shores of his native land. Readers of "The Phantom Ship" or of "Olla Podrida" will undoubtedly experience a sense of relief and relaxation in returning from continental tours, from tropical seas and desert islands, to the homely shores of Father Thames, where, with the flats of Essex on the one side, and the pleasant hills of Kent on the other, they may enjoy a well-earned repose. The Greenwich of our own day is a very different place from the picturesque old town that Captain Marryat knew. Even in his time, however, improvements were being carried on with an unsparing hand, and he feels a little uncertain as to whether his readers will be able to identify the precise localities of his story. Houses like that of the affable Dr. Tadpole, "of dark red brick, much ornamented, and probably built in the reign of Queen Elizabeth," were even then conspicuous among the crowd of newer and meaner neighbours.
