A gentle touch from ´Jean´ will bring the old man to his feet, with a salutation so deferential and courtly, as to make you feel a little bit self-important - at least such is its effect upon me: and my chats drift into a cross-questioning of the sergeant as to his soldier-life, which he always meets with patient kindness.
