Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Sequel to Catholic Emancipation, Vol. 1 of 2: The Story of the English Catholics Continued Down to the Re-Establishment of Their Hierarchy in 1850 It was in the year 1906 that the Bishop of Clifton invited me to his house to see the collection of letters and papers which he had lately discovered bound up in some thirty large volumes, relating to the days of the later Vicars Apostolic from 1780 onwards; and he was kind enough to press me to study them and to write on the period which they covered. At first it seemed impossible to spare sufficient time to undertake so large a work with any hope of doing it satisfactorily. As, however, he urged his request, eventually, though with much diffidence, I consented to try the first period. Gradually the work developed; it has already grown into five volumes, and now to two more. Whatever measure of usefulness may have resulted therefore is attributable in the first instance to the Bishop of Clifton´s initiative. At the same time it would not have been possible to write of the period with any completeness, but for the uniform encouragement received from all quarters, and the freedom with which those in whose keeping are the various letters and papers which survive from those times have permitted free access to them, and given every facility and encouragement to the work.
