Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Rome´s Assault on Our Public Schools: Bane and Antidote It will be very gratifying, I am sure, to a large number of the people of this Stale to hear of the opening of this institution of learning. The establishment of such an institution has long been regarded by many in the light of a necessity. If it was not erected at an earlier date it was not that its necessity was not understood or that its advantages were not foreseen. It was rather because those who were qualified to act in this matter were not in a position to give eflec to so important an undertaking at an earlier period. I!ut, though delayed for the reason I assign, its accomplishment was yet ardently wished for and earnestly expected. This was nothing but what was natural, for the establishment of an institution of tliis character is a pledge of progress-an assurance of enlightenment. The celebration, then, in which we have been called iqKjn to take part to-day, is not one of an ordinary character. It is, on the contrary, of an exceptional!v important nature, Imvlngbeen looked forward to and anxiously expected with more than ordinary interest for a considerable lime by a large section of the community. Indeed, next to the establishment of onr State Cniversitv, 1 know of no other college or academy of learning on this side of the Bay of San Francisco, that has awakened such general interest or that has drawn together on the occasion of its inauguration so largo an assemblage as I have witnessed here to-day. It is pleasing to think that the success which has thus far attended thisopening, at lean in the point of numbers has been in every sense equal to the expectations which have been indulged in by the friends and well wishers of this work. Nor should this be at all a matter of surprise, for considering the work that this institution is expected to do and which it is likely to accomplish, it would be rather astonishing had not so deep and lively an interest been manifested in it by t he general community. The advantages under which this seat of learning starts on its career of usefulness are indeed of a very exceptionally favorable character. In fact few institutions of a like nature have had. at tlieoutset, mj much in their favor. Located here, in the verv heart of this nourishing burgh-this Athens of the Pacific Coast-with its delightful and salubrious climate-within easy reach of .San Francisco, in close proximity with the chief institution of learning on this Coast, in possession of an admittedly competent staff of able instructors, added to the general good feeling now existing in its favor, it would indeed lie most disup)ointitig and entirely to l>e unexpected did not the College of St. Mary´s of thikluud, liecomeone of thechief educational establishments of this great Republic. Rut what, it may lie enquired, wili be the character of the instruction that will lie imparted in this college? Will it be of a kind and of standard that will meet the approval and satisfy the requirements of the people of our time? I answer unhesitatingly in the affirmative, ami I say- ´ves." It is proposed, as far as I understood the sc -peof the work to lie done, to :urn out from these hnllsof learning, accomplished, well trained scholars-youths japnble of taking their places creditable in all the honorable departments of life in the community. It is proposed to prepare and qualify young men here for engaging in all the useful and profitable pursuits of human industry in :he coimuunitv; it is proposed to train them for entering upon the various iberal professions.
