Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Memoirs of Celebrated Women, Vol. 2 of 2 After passing a life, distinguished alike by the display of literary, as well as military talents, Theodore Agrippa d´Aubigne died at Geneva in 1630, leaving a son. Constant, father of Frances, afterwards Marchioness de Maintenon. As his conduct and vicious propensities induced the unfortunate train of misery and wretchedness, in the midst of which our heroine was brought into existence, and received the first rudiments of her education - and from which also she was for some years one of the chief sufferers - it will be necessary, ere we proceed, to trace the distinguishing circumstances of his history, that we may be led to a proper estimate of her character and motives. It is ever painful to record the dereliction of a son from the conduct of a noble and virtuous father; but in spite of a liberal education, salutary advice, and the best examples a well spent life could furnish, Constant d´Aubigne profited but little from the care of his parent. Being early in life through his extravagance involved in debt, he was very solicitous of settling in Carolina, and for this purpose obtained the post of Viceroy of the American Islands; but, before leaving France, it having transpired that he had had some understanding with the English, of which the French court became cognizant, they not only immediately revoked his appointment, but deprived him also of the government of Maillezais, which he had till then enjoyed.
