In the Stories of Indian Children, by the same author, an effort was made to show the family life of the North American Indian before the white man had discovered this continent. The present volume shows the conflict between the Indian and white man, both in war and in peace, during the pioneer struggles in America. It begins with the discovery by Columbus, and closes with a picture of the Indian life of to-day. It is preparatory to a more extended history of pioneer life as set forth in McMurry´s Pioneer History Stories of the Mississippi Valley, and in Pioneer Explorers by Land and Sea. This book is adapted to the advancement of children in the third and fourth year grades of schools. One purpose of it is to awaken among the children who read it, a sympathy for this dying race, and a desire to promote their education and prosperity in all ways that are practicable.
