Excerpt from A Memorial of Fitz-Greene Halleck: A Description of the Dedication of the Monument Erected to His Memory at Guilford, Connecticut; And of the Proceedings Connected With the Unveiling of the Poet´s Statue in the Central Park, New York Soon after the death of Fitz-Greene Halleck, near the close of the year 1867, his friend Gen. Jas. Grant Wilson, aided by Mr. Benjamin H. Field, and the Hon. Horace Greeley, of New York, by Gen. H. W. Halleck, the poets kinsman, then in command of the Division of the Pacific, and Mr. Horace H. Moore, of San Francisco, collected the sum of two thousand dollars among the poets many friends and admirers, for the purpose of erecting a suitable monument at Guilford, Connecticut, his birth and burial place. It is made of Rhode Island granite, and is nearly eighteen feet high. Upon the front tablet is the simple inscription, in bas-relief. "Fitz-Greene Halleck, 1790-1867," and upon the cornice of the pedestal, the following lines from his poem of "Marco Bozzaris": "One of the few, the immortal names. That were not born to die." Above the inscription is a monogram, consisting of the Greek letters Alpha and Omega - the beginning and end - and near the foot of the obelisk an oak branch.
