Excerpt from Christian Socialism, Explained and Enforced, and Compared With Infidel Fellowship: Especially, as Propounded by Robert Owen, Esq., And His Disciples The substance of this Volume was delivered to the Author´s own congregation in a Course of Lectures, and excited considerable attention and approbation. In preaching them, he was actuated by an imperative sense of duty, and in yielding to the request of his friends to publish them, he is encouraged with the hope, that some evil may be prevented, and good done to the souls of men. Some alterations have been made in the order and arrangement of the Lectures, and some additions have been judged expedient, in the matter of them, which it is hoped will be deemed improvements. His object has not only been to expose the fallacious reasonings, the false doctrines, and pernicious principles of this new form of infidelity; but to enforce and establish the great truth, namely, that the Christian Religion is the only scheme by which society can be raised to an intelligent, holy, and happy condition, while the prevalence of atheistic infidelity would originate a state of barbarous crime, and irremediable misery. Read over this small Volume carefully, especially the four last Lectures, and he humbly ventures to hope, though his performance is very imperfect, that you will close the book with the deep conviction, that infidelity is the greatest curse, and real religion is the greatest blessing for mankind.
