Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Second Reader Interesting Subject-matter. - In the Second Form much importance attaches to the thought. Mere word-pronouncing, even with imitation of proper emphases and modulations, if unaccompanied by the thoughts and feelings which the words should symbolize, is not reading. The interest of the pupil in the story contributes greatly towards his getting the thought, and correspondingly lessens the labor of the teacher in training him to give it natural and expressive utterance. No lesson is here included that is not interesting to the grade of children for which it is intended. Literary Merit and Ethical Quality. - While it is of first importance to acquire the ability to read, - an ability with which the element of interest may have so much to do, - there is something better, and that is, to acquire the taste for wholesome reading. In constant view of this fact both the literary merit and the ethical quality of the selections received careful consideration. Imaginative Literature. - Experience proves beyond question both the popularity and the usefulness of myth, fable, and fairy-story for children of the usual age of those in the Second Form. The choice of selections from this department of literature was mad by drawing on the experience of some of the most capable teachers in Canada, and by noting the stories used most frequently in the best Canadian, British, and United States Readers. Correlation with Nature Study. - In recognition of the important place that Nature Study now occupies on the Programmes of Study in all the Provinces, a considerable part of the prose and a still larger proportion of the verse was selected with a view to correlation with that subject.
