This anecdote makes one thing very clear... Madame Campan was only a waiting-maid. Although she had lived at Court from her very childhood, she had never been able to understand anything about the "honour of being in the Royal service" or, if she ever had an idea of its importance, time, the Revolution and her own fortunes made her forget the wisdom and the greatness of this servitude.
