Excerpt from A Gallery of Master Historians In submitting this small contribution to the art of Historiography to students or general readers, I hope that its interest will be strong enough to stir in them a desire to go straight to the Masters and read the creations of their genius. Indeed, if this hope is not realised, this book serves no useful purpose, and in vain have I dared to borrow a few of the gems in the treasury of historical art and literature.
