Excerpt from Journal of the Eleventh Annual Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in the Diocese of Illinois: Held in Alton, Madison County, in the Twenty-First and Twenty-Second of June 1817 The Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Diocese of Illinois assembled according to appointment, this the 21 st day of June, A. D. 1847. On Sunday, the day previous, the religious solemnities preparatory to business were celebrated according to usage, under a resolution recommending the same. In the morning Rev. Mr. Kelley read prayers; Rev. S. Chase preached; the Bishop read the ante-communion service, and consecrated the elements, assisted in the distribution by Rev. Mr. McMasters. In the afternoon. Rev. Mr. Worthington read prayers, and the Bishop delivered his address. In the evening. Rev. Mr. Radley read prayers, and the Rev. Mr. Dresser preached a sermon in behalf of the Diocesan Missionary Association. The Rt. Rev. Philander Chase, D. D., Bishop of the Diocese, presiding, opened the Convention by prayer.
