Dear Sir, - The important question you asked yesterday was not, as I heard, resolved; and if so, Sir Charles Hardy must set our under the orders you mentioned. Should the expedition from Brest set out after the Preliminaries were known to have been signed, Lord Mansfield rightly said, it would be insidious, and no matter how ill they were treated. But should Sir Charles Hardy, setting our after we know the Preliminaries are signed, intercept Mons. de Blenac, what would our conduct be esteemed, and how much must we regret, and how would His majesty blame us, for the loss of what lives should, in such a case, be destroyed on either side.
