Barlow, Esquire My dear Friend, At your request I send herewith all the facts and documents known in regard to the dealings of Christopher Columbus with the famous Genoese Bank of St. George, and, incidentally, what I have been able to ascertain concerning his alleged autograph letter addressed to that institution, and dated Sevilla, April 2nd, 1502, which, you tell me, is, or was, for sale in New York at the price of $2000. I hope you will excuse my dividing this reply into chapters and clogging it with so many notes and quotations; but there was no other method of treating the subject, as you wished me to do, that is, historically and critically.
