On that account the title page describes it as the third edition, though it might be styled, with some propriety, the first edition; because the preceding editions, consisting each of a single volume, have been developed in the present into two, more voluminous than its predecessors; and because a considerable share of matter is found in the present of which there is scarcely a germ in the previous editions. The period embraced by the following sheets comprises the history, under a certain aspect, of a considerable portion of the Middle Ages, and as such cannot be devoid of interest for the reader.
