Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Miscellaneous Works and Novels of R. C. Dallas, Esq., Vol. 4 of 7: Containing the First Volume of Aubrey The virtues of the statesman and of the warrior are buoyed up by the glory that surrounds them; talents and a bold spirit exalt them in the eyes of their fellow-creatures; fame, and wealth, and honour are their reward. But take them from their splendid sphere, and place them under the dominion of adversity, where virtue is left to itself: if, endowed with fortitude, they yield nobly to the will of Providence, if they extract advantages from exile and from ruin, if they open new sources of happiness in their mind, and if they make opportunities of manifesting a benevolent heart, their sphere of action may be contracted, but, their soul is the more elevated; and love, and gratitude, and self-applause crown their retreat. In the latter point of view, Sir, it has been my good fortune to see you; a philosopher, historian, philanthropist, and friend. While the tear I have seen you shed for your king raised my respect, my affection was riveted by that which the tenderness of your heart bestowed on a promising youth, snatched from fond parents by an unexpected death. Your kindness to the father of that youth, the desire you have shown to serve him, the services you have rendered him, are deeply impressed upon his heart, which, as long as it beats, will feel for you the highest esteem and affection. But, however desirous to testify these feelings, I should probably not have thought of presenting a Novel to you, had not the progress of its subject (the severe trial of principle in adversity) brought to my mind the wonderful resignation and prudence of every class of the emigrants from France.
