Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Linleys of Bath It has been held by them of old time that if what is said three times is not always true what can produce three reasons for itself is fairly right. This Introduction can at least do as much. Its author lives at present between the Linley´s principal house in Bath and that quaint "Margaret" Chapel in the next street from which they derived some revenue. (It has had profaner experiences since.) In his youth he used not infrequently to "sit under" at St. Mary Abbot´s, Kensington, the late Archdeacon Sinclair, from whose information Miss Black derived some pleasing stories at the end of her book. And, in the third place, the first thing that he ever read about Sheridan while still ignorant of him as writer or as politician - indeed at the same time when he went to Old Kensington Church - was Charles Lamb´s sentences in "My First Play," Elia being, by the blessing of Providence, very nearly "his first book." It is true that "the beautiful Maria Linley" of whom Charles speaks, though she was beautiful, was not "Maria" at all, but Elizabeth Ann, and that the elopement, though it took place from Bath, did not take place "from a boarding-school at Bath." But no person in the lowest degree worthy to enjoy Elia as a literary feeding-bottle could think these trifling errors of any importance at all. There is, however, no harm in accuracy, though with some kinds of inaccuracy it would be unreasonable to quarrel; and as this excellent book has gone out of print and its author is not alive to represent it, the best thing possible is that it should be presented by somebody else.
