Derived from the Greek evOovs, or evOeos, that is, "full of the god," it may be interpreted to mean having a god within. It was one of the phases of this creative emotion which produced the society of solitaires or recluses who in the early seventeenth century associated themselves with the Abbey of Port-Royal, and formed with the original convent of nuns an organization which assumed a vast significance in the religious history of France.
