So the author makes no claim to literary grace or elegance, and only hopes that the story may in some slight degree controvert that eternal gullibility which makes possible the calling of the medical quack. Instead of stereotyped phraseology and severe logic, so often characterizing efforts along this line, a lighter vein of humor, satire and romance has been attempted; but it is hoped that the deeper and. more serious thread, that is designed to run through it, may not escape the reader, but that its influence may be to stimulate the substitution of common judgment and common sense for the blind, unthinking credulity which is responsible for the distinguishing disgrace of this country and age. - Medical Quackery.
