Excerpt from Discourse Delivered at Plymouth, Mass, Dec; 22, 1832: In Commemoration of the Landing of the Fathers There is a meaning involved in these words not inappropriate to the present occasion. Jesus reminds his disciples of the foundation already laid for the labors, on which they would enter in the exercise of their office as his ministers. In doing this, he uses expressions that may be applied in a general sense to the relation, in which all men stand to those who have gone before them in the way of duty, enterprise, or suffering. We devote this day to the memory of our Fathers. It is theirs, and not our own. There is a spirit of fellowship in the occasion, which recreates the heart. Whatever may be the strife or toil, to which we are called elsewhere, here we come together in the tie of a common relation to a past age and a past generation. As dutiful children we are willing, I trust, to hush every unkind or unworthy feeling, while we stand in the presence of the patriarchs of New-England.
