I don´t know that I ever so much as attempted to act up to my name of Peter (Peter, I take it, is a good-natured, rough-and-tumble, jocular sort of mortal), for the futility of any effort in that direction must have been manifest to me from the very first; but the fact that I have been condemned to make my humble way in the world under a label so misleading has often worried me and caused me to feel myself something of a sham.
