About twenty thousand verses are alleged to have comprehended the whole circle of the sciences forming a druidical course of education; and twenty long years were usually spent in committing these instructive couplets to memory. It has even been asserted, that the youths Were taught to repeat and to sing the statute laws of their country - a subject surely by no means the most inviting to the "linked sweetness" of harmony. We are also told, that they applied assiduously to the study of rhetoric, and had made Considerable advances towards the acquirement of oratory. They even gave public instructions in this persuasive science, and enumerated among their deities "one who was named Ogmius, which, in their language, signifies the power of eloquence."
