Excerpt from Twentieth Anniversary Services: Of the Second Baptist Church Germantown Germantown, Phila To a remarkable degree the history of the Sunday-school and of the Church has been interdependent. The Church grew out of the school, and has largely drawn therefrom during all these years the additions to its membership. By a pleasing coincidence the Church completed its first score of years and the Sabbath-school superintendent his quarter-century of service about the same time. In view of the wonderful growth and prosperity of both Church and school, it was deemed advisable that these anniversaries should be jointly celebrated with appropriate services. Accordingly, September 26 and 27, 1886, were set apart, and an interesting programme of exercises carried out. Large gatherings were in attendance, friends long separated clasped hands again, many reminiscences were recalled, and the services throughout were of deep interest, and have left very grateful memories. A very pleasing feature of the Sabbath-school celebration was the gift from the officers and teachers of the school of a beautiful souvenir to the beloved superintendent, Deacon Charles H. Cummings. In deference to the earnest desires expressed for some permanent memorial of these services, this little volume has been prepared.
