Excerpt from Fénelon: His Life and Works Paul-Alexandre-René Janet, philosopher, man of letters, moralist, and historian, was bom in Paris on the 30th of April, 1823, of a family of booksellers, which, as he said, "n´avait rien à regretter de l´Ancien Régime. He entered the ecole Normale at the age of 18, where he formed lifelong friendships with Hippolyte Rigault, the critic, Francois Thurot, the philologist, and Emile Burnouf, the orientalistst. In 1844, he passed the final examination, of which Victor Cousin, the chief examiner, says in his report: "Sa leçon sur la divine Providence est assurément une des plus fortes et des plus belles que j´aie entendues depuis quinze ans. La doctrine la plus pure, une méthode sévèr, un rare savoir, une élocution nette et vigoureuse ont, pendant une heure entière, captiv un nombreux auditoire." The same year, Janet became private secretary to Cousin, and assiduously worked with him on his great edition of Pascals Pensées.
