Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from A Memorial of Harriet Elizabeth Caryl, 1834-1918 It is not what the best men do, but what they are, that constitutes their truest benefaction to their fellowmen. It is the lives like the stars, which simply pour down on us the calm light of their bright and faithful being up to which we look, and out of which we gather the deepest calm and courage. Phillips Brooks About ninety years ago, a young man by the name of Lucian Willard Caryl came to Boston to study medicine. He was a country boy, a native of Barnard, Vermont, and a graduate of Union College, New York. At the close of his medical course, he served for a year as house physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital. During this time, he met, and soon after married, Miss Frances Amelia Whitney, one of five daughters living with their parents in a dignified old house on Myrtle Street. After their marriage, Lucian Caryl and his wife went to Buffalo, New York, where he practiced medicine, spending many of his spare hours in the study of mathematics and astronomy, in both of which he was deeply interested and unusually proficient. Here in Buffalo, on the 21st of November, 1834, a little daughter was born, who was named Harriet Elizabeth.
