The selections in this book are arranged in the order in which they were written. As we read them, we see unfolding before us the history of England and America. First, with the beginnings of English books and learning is Chaucer, and a little later Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton. After them come the writers of the Eighteenth Century, Addison, Goldsmith, and Burns; then the great Romantic writers and poets, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Scott and others of their day; then the Victorians, - Tennyson, Browning, Dickens, Thackeray and their contemporaries. We find American literature growing out of the English and flowering in the last century in that group of poets and writers which included Irving, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Emerson, Whittier, Lowell and their followers.
