Excerpt from The Works of George Herbert: In Prose and Verse I am not aware that any Edition of Herbert´s Poetry, or Prose, has hitherto with Notes, or Illustrations. The present attempt to supply that want, may, therefore, be received with some forbearance and favour. I should have rejoiced to track the poet´s footsteps, into those still paths of theological learning, which he loved to frequent, and to have brought the torch of the Fathers to illuminate some of his obscrurer allusions. - But the books was wanted, and time pressed. The early spelling has been generally retained, as harmonising with the old-world found of the language, and the mellow colour of the thoughts. The Vandyck looks best in its ancient frame.
