Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature, Vol. 6: The Origins and Sources of the Court of Love This volume is substantially a dissertation presented to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University in May, 1898, to fulfil a requirement made of candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The investigation was begun as an inquiry into the pseudo-Chaucerian Court of Love; and in the first chapter a rearrangement of the text of that poem, and in the seventh certain conclusions as to its sources, represent the main results of this inquiry. But the search for sources led naturally to a wider and wider extension of the field, until the dissertation finally included a general account of the rise and development of some of the leading features of mediæval love-allegory. The number of instances I have found of the central conception of a court held by the God or Goddess of Love and attended by personifications of abstract qualities is so large as almost to justify the treatment of this class of allegory as a separate literary genre. The chapter on the Statutes of Love attempts to trace the origin and indicate the extent of one of the most interesting features of this genre, and at the same time presents a body of material for the study of mediæval social ideals. The chapter on Philobone is devoted to a short analysis of a familiar type in the literature of the Middle Ages; and that on the Bird´s Matins contains a collection of evidence possessing interest other than literary in its bearing on the mediæval attitude towards religion.
