The wards mentioned were chosen at random, without any intention of giving the impression that they are either especially noteworthy or notorious. In a word, although the scene is located in Chicago, the "Eighth" and "Twenty-fourth" are fictional wards, used to demonstrate conditions that do exist in some wards in nearly all large cities. The political methods employed, however, are, in most instances, taken from the actual experiences of men who have served the public in one capacity or another, and the stories told of some of the characters are literally true. The author begs to acknowledge the courtesy of some men on the inside, who have given him specific instances, in addition to general information, of the devious ways of politics. He has excellent reason to believe, however, that they would not care to be more particularly identified, even for the purpose of receiving his formal thanks.
