As respects that highly interesting and important subject, the work in question traces from the most simple to the most complex forms of language, how the rudest as well as the most enlightened and polished speakers and writers are more or less indebted to external Nature for particular modes of expression prefiguring some object, or its qualities, or phenomena connected therewith. The style that thus gives figurative expression to our ordinary discourse, to proverbial sayings, and to many popular songs, is usually, in its higher flights, but in no other, attributed to immediate inspiration for its origin; but whether such "inspiration" is real or only imaginary has always, apparently, been considered too sacred to be called in question.
