Excerpt from Life of Samuel Johnson In the parish register of Packwood, in Warwickshire is the following entry: - Mickell Johnsones, of lichfield and Sara Ford maried June y 19th, 1706. The bridegroom, Michael Johnson, a bookseller of good repute, was fifty years of age, and the bride thirty-seven. It was more than three years after this marriage that their eldest child was born at Lichfield on the 18th of September, 1709. He was named Samuel after a maternal uncle, Samuel Ford, or perhaps after his godfather, Dr. Samuel Swinfen, who, at that time, was lodging with the family at the old house in the market place, opposite St. Mary´s Church.
