Excerpt from A Serious Exhortation to the Electors of Great Britain: Wherein the Importance of the Approaching Elections Is Particularly Proved From Our Present Situation Both at Home and Abroad The War we are now engag´d in must convince you of the one, as must the State of our domestick Affairs, if considered, of the other. Hitherto, during the long Delegacy of a Septennial Parliament, you have not had it in your Power to apply any Remedy to those Grievances you may have thought call´d loudly for Redress; but as now that Delegacy will shortly be resum´d again into your own Hands, every Thing will once more depend upon your selves, who may then confer that Trust on such only whose Sentiments shall be agreeable to your own, on whose Wisdom and Prudence you can rely, and of whose Disinterestedness and Independence you shall be perfectly assur´d. You must be all sensible, how much the well conducting of a War must be owing to the wise and steady Councils of a considerate and uncorrupt Parliament. They have the first and principal Right, as the Grand Council of the Nation, to offer their Advice in any Point they shall think conducive to that End; they are the Judges of the upright or wicked Measures, the wife or weak Conduct of those more immediately concerned in its Management.
