Excerpt from The Future OEcumenical Council: A Letter by the Bishop of Orleans to the Clergy of His Diocesk In Presenting the Public with an English version of the Bishop of Orleans´ Lettre sur le Future Concile OEcumenique, we have to append the following translation of the Brief which our Most Holy Father has been graciously pleased to address to His Lordship on the subject: - "Pius P. P. IX. "Venerable Brother, Health And Apostolic Benediction. "It is with very great pleasure, Venerable Brother, that We have seen you avail yourself of the opportunity offered by the Apostolic Letters addressed by Us to the Bishops of the Eastern rite not in communion with Us, as well as to the other non-catholic Christians, to give a new and more extended edition of your Letter on the Future OEcumenical Council, on that which is to be its character and cause its utility. And We congratulate you on having stated with as much clearness as eloquence the sound doctrine on the rights and prerogatives of the Holy See, and on its supreme authority in these kinds of assemblies. You have also explained in a very pertinent and luminous manner what is Our solicitude for the salvation of those who are in error, and triumphantly demonstrated that the exhortations which have emanated from Us are inspired only by the spirit of charity, and have but one end - the glory of God, the progress of the Church, and the true interests of those to whom We address Ourselves. We have therefore received with gratitude your work, which We foresee and hope will cause the darkness, which ignorance and malignity have spread in minds, to disappear, and incline all hearts to desire the very efficacious remedy of the Council. This remedy has in past centuries dissipated errors and restored peace to troubled Christian society: in the same manner, by making the causes of actual evils disappear, it will be able to avert the formidable calamities which threaten our times.
