This circle has since 1890 inaugurated and maintained in Germany the counter-movement against naturalism, and has opposed to its social and other aims that have no relation to art, a new treatment of the form, of the versification, of the scope of art. Its effect in Germany soon outstripped the at-first narrow, esoteric limitations, so that to-day the whole of the young generation is under the influence of this form of poetry, from which even the former representatives of naturalism can no longer withdraw themselves.
