Although this story is mainly fiction, it is not without a foundation of truth, both in the relations of the hero to his uncle, and in the singular event upon which the turning-point of the plot rests. The localities of the various incidents are intended to be correctly described, as they were fixed in the mind of the writer by a pleasant sojourn of a few weeks on Cape Ann during a summer vacation.
