But the custom of speech has established a distinction which it behoves us to recognise here, since that distinction was valued by those whom it favoured, and became in later days a local mark of honour, having its psychological, if not its social value, wherever the men of the pioneer times drew together. Goldseekers and voyagers they all had been, but it was to the men of the Great Year alone - the new-comers of 1849 - that the designation of Argonauts came to be distinctively applied. It follows that in giving to this selection from Bret Harte´s works the title which it bears - a title for which we are indebted to a precedent set by the best of all authorities - we are, in fact, using the leading term a little largely, a little beyond or aside from the rigour of its right Californian meaning.
