Excerpt from Writings on American History American 1936: A Bibliography of Books and Articles, on United States History Published, During the Year 1936 For explanations concerning the plan of this bibliography the reader may be referred to the preface of one of its early predecessors. Beginning with the present volume, however, the scope of this annual bibliography has been changed in that the content has been limited to writings on the history of the United States and its outlying possessions, in contrast to previous volumes which have included material on the history of Canada and the Latin American countries. But it is to be noted that, although writings dealing specifically and entirely with the history of the countries to the south of the United States have been omitted, all items treating of the colonial history of those sections of the United States which were formerly part of the overseas empire of Spain (i. e. Florida, Louisiana, California, and the Southwest) have been included, as has also all material dealing with the history of diplomatic relations of the Latin American countries, and of Canada, with the United States. The change in policy described above has been made in the interests of economy, both of tune required for compilation, and of printing costs. This volume has been prepared at the Library of Congress. For the facilities which have been granted there, thanks are gratefully rendered to Dr. Herbert Putnam, Librarian Emeritus; to the present Librarian, Mr. Archibald MacLeish; and to other members of the staff of the Library. The preparation of the manuscript, as distinguished from the printing and publication, has been sustained by a group of subscribers consisting of various historical societies and individuals, the present list being the following: The American Historial Association, American Catholic Historial Association, American Philosophical Society, Bowdoin College, Brown University, Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Illinois State Historical Society, Indiana Historial Bureau, State Historical Society of Iowa, Missouri Historical Society, Newberry Library, New York Historical Society, State Historial Society of Wisconsin, University of Pennsylvania, Prof. Julian P. Bretz, Mr. Clarence S. Brigham, Dr. Max Farrand, Mr. Albert Matthews. A cumulative index covering the volumes for the years 1906-1930, inclusive, is now in process of compilation by Mr. David M.
