Excerpt from Book of Church Services: With Orders of Worship, Prayers, and Other Aids to Devotion In nearly every branch of the Christian church there is a growing desire to make the service of worship more suitable and effective. It need not be more formal, but it may well be more beautiful and attractive. The order in which the different parts of these services are arranged proceeds from Aspiration to Adoration and Praise; from Praise to Prayer, from Prayer to Reflection, culminating in Inspiration and Consecration. There should be in the service a nobility of expression and a fitness of phrase which satisfy mind and heart, for, as has been well said, "the worship of the church should represent the very ideal of thought and feeling and language." Because of this increasing appreciation of the importance of elevating and enriching the service of worship, the National Council of Congregational Churches has for several years had a Commission on Worship, and has authorized it to publish the results of its studies and labors. Those who have served on this Commission are as follows: Rev. Charles H. Richards, Chairman; Rev. Lucius H. Thayer; Dean Edward I. Bosworth; Prof. John W. Buckham; Prof. Waldo S. Pratt; Rev. Harry P. Dewey; Prof. Henry Hallam Tweedy; Rev. Charles H. Cutler, and President W. Douglas Mackenzie. The services here presented cover nearly all the customary occasions of church worship. Many of them are already in use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
