Excerpt from Professor Smith on the Bible: And Dr. Marcus Dods on Inspiration The literature of the Old Testament embraces two periods - first, a period of religious productivity, and then, a period of stagnation and conservatism. The first period extends from the time of Moses to that of Ezra, during which there was a continual conflict between spiritual religion and various forms of polytheism. The spiritual religion was compelled during this conflict to prove itself capable of growth and development, so as to vindicate its superiority to the false systems. In Ezra´s time the spiritual religion triumphed. From Joshua to Samuel we find a state of political disintegration and tribal jealousy, during which the worship of Jehovah was kept from being lost by the priesthood serving at the sanctuary of the ark. From the priestly ranks Samuel arose as a reformer to reunite the nation and revive the true worship. He did this, however, not as a priest, but as a prophet. (634 a.) A priesthood is always conservative, not creative; but the spiritual religion could only live as a growing and creative power. It is the function of the priest to conserve the traditions of the past; it is the prophet who has the faculty of seeing religious truth in new lights. From Samuel´s time the priest falls into the background, the prophetic ideas being distasteful to his aristocratic conservatism. The prophet´s work has hitherto been misunderstood in consequence of a twofold traditional prejudice - (1) Undue prominence has been given to the predictive element, and attention has thereby been withdrawn from the influence exerted on contemporary religious life; and (2) it has been assumed, in accordance with Jewish notions, that all the ordinances, and nearly all the doctrines, which are found in the post-canonical period were delivered by Moses at the very outset. Thus the prophets were regarded partly as inspired preachers of old truths, and partly as predicting future events. But, in reality, they were leaders of a great development whereby both the doctrines and the ordinances were advanced from a crude and imperfect state to a mature and adequate form. It is only on this view that we can have a just insight into the prophet´s work. The laws of grammatico historical exegesis applied to the Old Testament have proved the development theory to be the only true one, both as regards doctrine and ritual.
