Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Verses From Fen and Fell Among the many curious instincts which disturb and not infrequently discredit human nature, there is none which is more difficult to account for - since its ´survival value´ must be of the slightest - than the mysterious impulse which leads so many of us, ´in an uncertain hour,´ to break out into verse, and which persuades us so easily that crude thoughts and flippant fancies may be made presentable and even pleasing, if only they are tricked out with rhyme and metre. Though the exact place of this obscure instinct in the general scale has not yet been determined by psychologists, we shall probably be safe in saying that it occupies a respectable position midway between those high instincts before which our guilty nature trembles and those which we have in common with the brutes, and the fact that reason has little or nothing to do with the matter will be felt to be less of a discredit at the present than at any previous time. Being liable, like everything else that is worth having, to excess and abuse, it is the plain duty of everyone who feels it stirring within him to consider carefully how far it will be well for him to hold it in check, and to what extent it may be permitted free scope and exercise.
