In no system is the levelling principle more prevalent than in that of the understanding: in the republic of intellect, the slightest pretension to step out of the crowd awakens universal jealousy, and the title of the pretender is rigidly examined. In assuming the pen, therefore, it is but natural for me to wish to conciliate my Readers, and to leave their judgment free to decide solely upon the merits of the volumes now before them, without taking into consideration the novelty of the pretension to the public ear. It would be easy for me to say, and to say with truth, that the ambition I have to please is founded on motives very different from that of vanity; yet I should not deserve to be believed were I to assert that praise was indifferent to me.
